What is the Law Reform Commission
The Fiji Law Reform Commission is a body created by law to review and examine Fiji’s laws for the purpose of their reform and development.
History
The Commission was established in 1979 under an Act of Parliament, (the Fiji Law Reform Commission Act). The main function of the Commission is to assist the Government of the day and the law makers (Parliament) by providing advice on the areas of law that need reform and by suggesting the manner in which those reforms might be put in place or implemented.
What we do – Statutory mandate & function
Under the Act the Commission has its aim to enforce the systematic review, reform and development of the laws of Fiji. The Commission role and duties include the codification of our laws; the elimination of anomalies in the laws; the repeal of outdated and unnecessary laws; the reduction of separate legislations; the making of new laws; the adoption of new or more effective and economical methods for the administration of the law and the dispensation of justice, and generally to simplify, improve and modernize the law.

The many research papers, Final Reports, draft legislation and other publications produced by the Commission over the last 25 years since establishment in 1979 were made possible with the contribution of the many hardworking Chairmen, Commissioners, Directors and staff who served the Commission.
Over its 25 years of operation, the Commission can be described as having undergone four distinct periods of development. These were under the leadership of:
i. 1980 – 1987: Inaugural Chairman, Mr. Justice K. A Stuart (1980 - 1984) assisted by the Secretary, Mr. Walter Sisarich. Mr. Manikam Pillai was appointed the second Chairman of the FLRC from 1984 - 1987.
ii. 1994 – 1999: Chairmanship of Judge D.V. Fatiaki, Professor Anthony Tarr and Mr. Rabo Matebalavu during the directorship of Ms. Florence Fenton.
iii. 1999 - 2003: Director Mr. Walter Rigamoto, and Acting Director Mr. Kiniviliame Keteca.
iv. 2003 – present: Executive Chairperson, Mr. Alipate Qetaki.
